For example when I used a resume template to create my document, I can change font colors using the ribbon tool, and the Undo drop down shows these changes as "font color", as I would expect. As mentioned in the header, I am using Word I do not recall this happening when working with documents created in previous versions of Word. I would appreciate any insight on this.

I have written extensively on using Word and have authored help articles on the Microsoft site.

I, too, see this disparate reporting in the Undo stack of what one would think are the same action. Your best bet, long term, is to use character styles for this type of change, rather than direct formatting.

You can attach a keyboard shortcut to such a style. That keyboard shortcut can also be used to remove direct formatting from any text and return it to the underlying paragraph style format. If you are a regular user of Word and have not yet learned the importance of using style-based formatting, you should sped a bit of time to do so. It will save you time and problems in short order. It is safe. I am providing it because I think it contains information that will help you.
